Why compress a video

Raw video files are huge, and platforms enforce limits: many messaging apps cap clips at 16 to 25 MB, email attachments are even smaller, and upload time on a slow connection can be painful. Compressing reduces the bitrate and re-encodes the video so the same clip takes far less space, letting you send or post it without hitting a size wall.

How compression trades size for quality

Video size is driven mainly by bitrate, the amount of data used per second. Lowering it shrinks the file but, pushed too far, introduces blockiness in fast motion. A balanced setting keeps everyday footage looking clean at a fraction of the original size. Resolution and frame rate also affect size, so reducing a 4K clip to 1080p saves a lot on its own.

Choosing a target

Match the setting to the destination. For social media and messaging, a moderate compression that targets common limits is usually invisible to viewers. For archiving, you can compress harder since the clip will mostly sit in storage. For anything you will edit later, keep quality higher to avoid stacking compression losses across edits.

How your video is handled

Video encoding is demanding, so the file is sent over an encrypted connection to a processing server, compressed there, and the smaller result returned to you. The uploaded video is processed in an isolated worker and deleted within 30 minutes by a scheduled cleanup job; it is never logged or retained beyond that window.
